Herbs have a lot of different nutrients in them and by adding them to your chicken’s diet, you can help them stay healthy and get those beautiful yolks that make your own eggs so beautiful.

Is it easy to grow chicken herbs?

Chances are, you already have a lot of herbs growing on your property that are useful when chickens are raised. And if you don’t, starting to grow your own chicken herbs from scratch in water is easy.

The chicken herbs that you can grow

Basil grows super fast, and it grows in soil, and can also be easily propagated from the start. Therefore, it’s a no brainer to add basil into your chicken feed. It is high in antioxidants which can encourage a healthy immune system for your birds.

  • Garlic herbs

Garlic has antibacterial properties, so many people like to add the whole cloves every week to the water in their chicken. You may of course also add it to their feed.

  • Mint herbs

Chickens may not show much interest in eating mint, but if they are fenced in, it would be a different story. Since mint can help with digestion it’s probably worth a try!

  • Red clover herbs

Clover has so many beneficial uses as a cover crop, an attractor for pollinators, and a pasture plant that there is no excuse not to let it grow on your homestead backyard. It has advantages for the reproductive system, so this is great particularly if you want your own stock to hatch out! Plus, it will save you the costs of feeding them.

Benefits of growing chicken herbs

The aforementioned herbs are only a few that have advantages for your backyard chickens.

Your chickens are more likely to be at their optimal health by adding herbs to your husbandry practices. You can prevent potentially complicated problems and costly solutions.

Plus adding herbs to your feed will save you money, even if you’re buying chicken feed prepackaged. You may not have the space or even want for your birds, to grow a patch of corn and soy, but it’s easy to add some attractive herbs around the homestead.

How to prevent Bird flu in the poultry farm

2
What causes respiratory diseases in chickens?

Bird flu is one of the most feared viral diseases that has threatened the poultry industry, hence knowing the symptoms in chickens is significant. It doesn’t only take 2 to 7 days to reproduce within a flock, it can even wipe out a whole farm before you can call a vet.

It is normal to find Type A viruses in waterfowls and other wild birds. Bird Flu causes considerable concern as we consider the likelihood of the virus infecting domestic birds.

Chickens, ducks, turkeys, and even parrot-like psittacine birds have been found susceptible to this condition. Although wild birds may become bird flu carriers without getting sick, their effect on domestic birds is always fatal.

Types of bird flu and their signs

Like Newcastle which has three major varieties, there are two types of bird flu too. The low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses and the high pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAI). Birds also survive the LPAI with a decline in the development of eggs and ruffled feathers.

The pathogenicity of the HPAI makes survival difficult for chickens, though. Usually, HPAI-infected birds can drop dead without a sign, and that can happen within a week. Bird flu history tells us that HPAI and LPAI can swiftly take over a whole flock.

One would say the LPAI is better and easier to manage but it is important to understand that LPAI can evolve into HPAI.

The symptoms of Bird Flu in Chickens

So while wild birds are usually known as the bird flu carriers and hosts, domestic birds such as chickens are also infected. Here are some signs of bird flu that you are supposed to look out for.

  • Inflamed eyelids, head, wattles, peas, and jams
  • Wattle, pebbles, and legs will turn purple
  • Chickens will die without showing any signs
  • Chickens infected skip coordination
  • Diarrhea can follow other signs
  • Chickens lose strength and are not going to eat
  • Nasal discharge visible
  • Important decrease in egg production
  • They lay eggs with softshell. You can even get misfits
  • Coughing and Sneezing

Getting aware of the signs of bird flu in chickens isn’t about what the farmer wants to know. Any suspected or confirmed cases should also be reported to relevant animal health authorities within your region.

The symptoms of avian flu in humans

People often ask whether bird flu can pass from animals to humans. The answer is YES! The main reason it’s not very popular is that not all forms of the virus affect people. In fact, in humans it is equally lethal, and here are some of the symptoms for it;

  • High rate of fever
  • Eye infections, especially conjunctivitis
  • Husk
  • Pain in the throat
  • Muscle troubles
  • Lung disease
  • Respiratory pain or dizziness

How to Prevent Chickens from Bird Flu in the farm

Now that we’ve thought about some of the signs of bird flu in chickens we should think about prevention. Biosecurity is the first line of defense.

If you have to prevent Avian influenza from your chickens, then you’ll need to avoid wild birds on your farm. Wild birds have been said to be the primary hosts of this disease, so you’ll need to avoid their entry.

By sealing the entire house you must prevent their entry into your book. You’ll need to use a wire mesh to cover up the upper portion because they usually move through this.

Any other initiatives intended to combat bird flu are also focused on biosecurity. You have to be vigilant at all times about who and what happens to your estate.

Since the emphasis is on obtaining a natural agent that can remove worms from chickens, first I find pawpaw seeds that stand out in their effectiveness.

Research demonstrates its ability to remove all roundworms and tapeworms that may hinder your birds from growing well. With pawpaw seeds, all worms can be disposed of within 2-3 days of use.

Another reason why pawpaw seeds are chosen is because it is an agricultural waste. Which means it will cost you practically anything to get. In my own case, I’ve just got to approach people slicing and selling pawpaw and they’ve always been happy to give me.

For them, it is a waste product, but to me, it is something of great value.

When should you use pawpaw seed to deworm chickens?

There are some signs and indications that the worms might infest your chickens. Slow growth and a lack of appetite are one prominent symptom. It’s almost like the worms eat the food while your bird eats.

The color and shape of your chicken feces can also act as a hint to getting worms and should be dewormed. Also, since the use of pawpaw seeds for chickens does not have an adverse effect you can deworm on a routine. Maybe just once a month, or so.

How to use pawpaw seeds to deworm your chickens

Through optimizing the use of any pawpaw tree near you, you can now choose to give your chickens a healthier life. When you harvest your papaya seeds, you will take these measures to dewater your chickens naturally.

  • Exhale the seeds and wash them to exclude the yellows
  • Sun-dry the seeds until well dry
  • Grind powder
  • Now you have to give 3 grams of powder per kg live-weight of chicken to cure worms. Which is, you need to administer 9 grams of the powder if you have a chicken which is 3KG in weight.
  • For as many chickens as you have you can do the Calculations.
  • To dewater them naturally, you can apply the pawpaw seed powder to their feed for 2-3 days

Benefits of this deworming method

Intestinal worms are fighting for the nutrients in their body with your poultry, so they should be extracted as soon as possible. This is to ensure that the weight of your chickens hits the market as when due.

It has been found that the use of Pawpaw seed powder is highly effective in removing worms and you can try it today

Lifting chicken feeders; benefits and method

3
Going-on-vacation-How-to-take-care-of-your-chicken-while-on-a-trip

You must have considered lifting chicken feeders, but maybe not the secret benefits of raising feeders. Interestingly, people advise this but many farmers are still unable to figure out exactly why.

Benefit from Lifting Chicken Feeders

  • For exercise and strength of the leg

What do the benefits of lifting chicken feeders have to do with that?

I know you may wonder about the heavy local/indigenous chickens and yet they don’t actually lift their feeders. That would be a nice thing to say but you also realize these chickens are not living in confinement.

Chickens elevated in confinement have little or no room to engage in healthy exercises. Putting their feeders onto the floor level would add to their laziness for this reason.

You’ll understand that broiler chickens tend to lie on their breast and feed from the floor if allowed. If you allow this, your broilers are most likely to develop problems with the legs due to their low leg activity.

  • Stimulates vertical growth – elevation

That’s another advantage of lifting feeders for chicken but I know you want to ask me how. Knew stretching was one of the known ways to grow taller? Even amongst humans. There’s that tendency that chickens will grow taller than those that don’t stretch out a little while feeding.

To make matters worse, if a chicken isn’t big to eat, then it’s bending. Such chickens have no reason to grow taller, of the environment at least.

Food is also connected to life, so if a chicken needs to be tall to eat at all times, then the brain informs him that if it doesn’t grow taller, one day there may be no food. That is what I think.

This does not however mean that you are stressing your chickens by raising the feeder above the normal level.

  • Chicken feeder lifting is for hygiene / Prevention of diseases

That is almost the simplest and most understood reason to raise feeders for chicken. The closer your chicken feeders are to the ground, the more likely they are contaminated by the feed.

Contamination here is by chicken feces, which may hold some sick chicken infections and can easily spread to healthy chickens.

Chickens raised in deep litter also often play with the bedding/litter material. When placed on the floor the litter material quickly gets into the feeder.

If your feeders are raised you won’t find much of the litter material in their feed.

  • To reduce wastage from feed

Talking about the benefits of raising the feeders for chicken, I think you won’t want to joke with this one. That’s because it directly impacts the poultry sector economically. If allowed, your chickens are going to do all sorts of things on their feed.

I often get pissed when I do my best to get the best performance of a very expensive feed, just to see my chickens dispersing everything on the ground like some cheap food. But no more, I no longer joke with raising feeders for my chickens.

How to lift Feeders for Chicken

When raising chicken feeders, the rule of thumb is to utilize their present height. You need to elevate the feeders to their back level. Please note this method applies most to hanging feeders. You need to position them on a platform for feeding troughs which you can’t hang.

As a poultry farmer, you must have these tools

  • An Electronic Scale
  • Sprayer on Knapsack

A Digital Electronic Scale

If you’re going to farm for real then you want to add your tools to a digital scale. Curiously, it’s much cheaper today. Several years ago I got my mine from Amazon and it’s still working. You can get one right here, in Nigeria as well.

For those who do organic farming, you’ll need your digital scale to measure your powder drugs or organic ingredients. Occasionally, the only reason your chickens don’t get better is because you give them a lower dose than required.

On the other hand, the poisoning causes certain people to kill their chickens. When measuring the ingredients in grams or milligrams, there is only one way to get things right. And they use a digital scale. They can also use your digital scale to weigh and rate your eggs. To those that are not used to scoring eggs by size, this is mostly true.

Sprayer on Knapsack

It is another multipurpose device enjoyed by any poultry farmer. Whether you’re fumigating around your farm or home or killing weeds, you’ll find this tool worthy of investment. Keep in mind that after use chemical substances should be rinsed out thoroughly. This will keep the sprayer around your knapsack for some years.

  • Boil the chicken and meats on high heat, starting first with tougher meats. Add salt and Knorr Chicken Cubes seasoning, as well as onions, but optional onions.
  • When the chicken and meats are nearly soft, add the Smoked fish and continue boiling until very soft …
  • Keep the leaves ready when the meats are cooking.
  • The Water leaves slice and wash to clear any traces of soil.
  • The Okazi / Afang leaves also wash and soak in hot water for 2 minutes. This process will help the Afang leaves soften.

Ways that you can treat chicken lice

1
What does it really take to start raising backyard chickens?

Chicken lice are ectoparasites that cause your chicken great discomfort. They cause the farmer large economic losses beyond what they do to your chickens. Hence the reason they need to be put out as soon as possible.

In this article, I’ll share natural and chemical ways in your chicken farm to eradicate lice and mites. But before I go to treat chicken lice, let’s remember some of the signs that tell you your chickens were infested with lice or chicken mites.

Signs of chicken lice infestation

  • Pale combs and wattles

Once infested with lice or mites, the combs and wattles of your chickens that start looking pale in color.

This is because the ectoparasites feed on blood and nutrients in your chicken. This is a common sign of serious infestation

  • Disconformity and Itchy feeling

Chickens preen on a regular day, but if you find too much pecking of feathers and preening, your chicken can have some lice or mites.

  • Sluggishness

Chickens infected with lice are always slow

  • Red patches under the wings

As a result of feeding, chicken lice can leave pink, red, or dark coloring under your chicken wings.

  • Appetite loss

This can occur when the chickens get heavily infested.

  • Fall in production of eggs

This is the farmer’s main economic concern. Egg production, like many other sicknesses in the hen’s body, often suffers

  • Physical appearance

Many lice are large enough to be seen by the eye without support.

Interestingly, chicken mites feed only at night, and will normally leap off the body of the chicken during the day. This means you’ll find them on the soil, or on the poultry house’s walls and pillars. One thing you can do to see them on your chickens is to come back 2-3 hours after light-out into their pen. By that time they’ll be back to feeding.

Treatment of chicken lice

There are a number of natural and cost-effective methods that have been tested and trusted to treat chicken lice and mites. For several decades some of these have been practiced, but the good thing is that they still work.

We also now have theoretical theories for why and how most of these natural remedies work. Some of the natural ways to combat lice and mites in Chicken include:

  • Wood Ash

Besides getting rid of the lice from an already infested flock, wood ash can also help prevent the infestation of lice or mites. Many of us used to think chickens only playful when they have a dust bath. But on the contrary, simply they are self-medicating.

  • Restore Iron

The lice must have lost some red blood cells to your heavily infested chickens and you want to restore it. Good sources of iron include spinach and pumpkin seeds. You want to serve these as flocking treatments while you treat chicken lice

  • Aromatic agents

These are good smelling plants that can repel ectoparasites. Examples include mint, lemon balm, and lavender balm. These are mostly useful though when the infestation is not severe.

  • Neem Oil

Neem oil is another great repellant that can be sprayed inside and around your chicken house to prevent the settling of chicken lice and mites.

How to avoid chicken lice

You need to be on guard to effectively prevent chicken lice or mites from invading. The following are things you might find your chickens to be fully lice-proof:

  • Don’t forget to quarantine

It can be risky to introduce new species. Any new chicken that carries an increasing number of lice so you’d like to keep it away from the rest of the flock for a while. This is known as quarantine.

  • Evite interaction with stray or wild birds

Another way may be giving access to wild birds. Allow no mistake of this. Cover the openings in your chicken house with netting material to prevent the entry of stray birds

  • Dust baths

This is an efficient way to keep your chickens free from lice. If chickens bathe in the dirt or wood ash, the ash burns the ectoparasite exoskeleton and causes them to dehydrate and die.

  • Avoid overcrowding

While overcrowding may not bring chicken lice or mites to your farm, it encourages these ectoparasites to rapidly multiply.

So, whichever solution you want, both chemical and natural treatments are reliable, and you’ll get the result you need if done well. Should sit, then? Act now and get rid of those little devils before causing too much havoc.

How cold water affects broilers

2
How cold water affects broilers

How Broiler chickens respond to cold water in hot weather is very similar to the craving for a chilled drink you and I have after a long walk under the sun. The likeness for cold water in meat birds is very dramatic compared with other types of chicken, popularly referred to as broilers. Broilers are known to consume much water and feed throughout their lifespan, which is relatively shorter than the chicken (layers) type of the egg.

  • The Clear Reason

The science behind that craving is the need to maintain temperature in the body. This activity places a lot of demand on the broiler called the meat-making machine. Anyone who has successfully brought up broilers to maturity can tell of their remarkable rate of growth.

The development of a broiler is essentially noticeable every day. This is due to this type of chicken being able to convert a large amount of feed eaten to meat.

Still referring to the bird as a meat-making machine, it is only reasonable to infer that the process of feed conversion will produce a lot of heat. If you have access to a broiler already, you can place your hand beneath its wings and see how hot it is.

  • Here’s How to Keep Calm

Having determined that the body temperature of a broiler is fairly high, let’s find ways to help it cool down. Temperature is a very important factor to remember when preparing for your broiler chickens, which type of housing to use. Whether you are going into commercial broiler chickens production or just need a backyard setting, housing is key.

The type of housing for broilers needs to make room for good ventilation. The amount of shade you provide around the broiler cage is equally important.

Enough shade keeps your chickens healthy and is motivating them to eat more. Know that, the more you feed, the more you grow and the better your outcome

Most importantly, never put water trough for your chickens under the sun. If you can’t give anything shade it shouldn’t be their water.

  • Is it Weird to give cold water or ice to your broiler?

When it comes to keeping the body temperature of your broilers cool during hot weather, you may not “overdo” it. You can also give them cold water in the hot afternoon, in addition to providing shade for their water. Just add ice to their water bowl.

If you have a broiler nipple drinker system with an easily reachable bucket, you can add the ice to the water bucket. This will make sure the water remains cool during exceptionally hot periods.

Feeding plays a very important role in any animal’s life and development and chickens are no exception. Of course, hungry chicken won’t be interested in the feed you have.

Warm water is not ideal for the already warm body of a broiler, either. The need to always serve cool freshwater thus improving good metabolism and preventing heat stress.
