Red Star Chickens, history, personality, and egg production
Genetically engineered to grow eggs day after day, the Red Star is a favorite of commercial egg producers. But are they the right option for your family? If you’re looking to introduce different chicken breeds to your backyard flock or you’re just starting out, it’s important to make sure your new hens fit in. This article is your best shot
History of the Red Star Chickens
Red Star is here are hybrids, they have a different father and mother races, and their own offspring will never be true to nature. They were established in the 1950s, when chicken keeping in the backyard was no longer as popular as before. The public wanted eggs and, in order to meet demand, the industry selectively bred hybrid hens to produce the most eggs while at the same time consuming the least amount of food.
What does the Red Star Chickens look like?
Males and females can be told apart very easily after hatching, and you should never have to deal with a rooster (cockerel) unless you want to. Depending on the breeds used, the male chicks are normally white or very light yellow; the females are light brown.
Female juveniles (pullets) continue to go through that gawky period, then begin to develop pleasant shades of brown darkening into a rich mahogany. They are very adaptable birds: they switch rapidly to a new environment.
As adults, males remain white while females grow varying shades of buff or brown, depending on the particular cross, with a pleasant white fleck.
What’s the personality of the Red Star Chickens?
- Generally gentle, quiet, polite, sweet chickens that will allow themselves to be picked up and petted.
- I don’t like over-attentiveness, though-this isn’t a chicken that wants to be cuddled. They’re going to stay with you for a bit, and then they’re going to want to be back, free-range again!
- Very curious and very engaged, they love to explore the outside world.
- Happiest when it comes to foraging animals, they’ll eat more or less anything and enjoy nothing more than daily treats!
- They have a simple language of their own, and they’ll let you know when they’re content with a soft, purring noise.
What about the Red Star Chickens’ egg production?
Each type of chicken is the product of a hybrid between one breed and another for the express purpose of egg-laying. That’s why they’re one of the most popular layers around.
Their eggs are a typical light brown color and sometimes very large-I had eggs that ranged around 5 oz to some at around 8 oz. It is equal to a medium / large shop-bought egg (but, of course, much tastier and healthier!).
Typical Red Star / red sex-linked chicken should start laying earlier than others-seventeen to nineteen weeks is not uncommon.
You may expect one egg a day from this kind of chicken, even in very hot or very cold weather. They slow down a little as you grind, when you’re expecting an egg every couple of days.
Feeding treats like food worms can turn egg yolk a beautiful dark yellow. And the Red Stars are also the first in line when it comes to mealworm treatments.
