The 5 Problems that are common with chickens

Unfortunately, it is probable that chickens would have some sort of problems at any stage during the life of your chickens, whether it’s broodiness, pests, or bullying.

When you have chickens there are several common problems that occur. They can seem frightening or intimidating if you aren’t prepared for them.

  • Molting

Molting is the method of removing all old feathers worn out, and replacing them with new plumage. All birds, like roosters, do happen. Some birds can take up to two years to complete a molt, but typically the humble chicken is made in three months.

  • Stops laying eggs

We all love our feathered friends but it is the eggs that are one of the main reasons people keep them. And, it can be very alarming when they stop laying eggs at some point.

  • Broodiness

What’s that broody hen? When you see it you’ll know it! She’s going to sit continuously in the nest, if anyone approaches her she’s going to grumble, squawk, and puff herself up, she can give you an all-powerful peck as well.

  • Intimidation and bullying

The pecking order is made known for a reason. Every bird that’s in a flock will have its own location. The top ones get to eat first, the bottom ones eat last. It is a hierarchy that is very simple but efficient so that all members know their position.

Because of this bullying happens to a small degree each day. Once a chicken leaves the turn she gets a short peck to her head to remind her of her status.

  • Predators

Even if you live in the middle of the city, your neighborhood will be a predator of chicken. Foxes, coyotes, raccoons, and the baby dog down the road would probably all want a chicken dinner and these are just the animals on the field.
