Those food you should never feed your chickens

Chickens are just going to eat almost any food in the world but that doesn’t automatically mean they can eat it.

So, here is a list of popular foods you should not feed your chickens.

  • Dried beans

Uncooked dry beans are extremely poisonous to both humans and chickens, due to an almost unpronounceable protein called phytohaemagglutinin.

We say that eating as little as 3 or 4 beans will kill a chicken, with death occurring in as little as an hour. Therefore, do not feed your birds this food.

  • Avocado Pear

Avocados have a fungicidal toxin named persin. I’ve heard some people say you ‘re just concerned about skins and pits, but the flesh is perfect in moderation. Other people will tell you to completely steer clear of the avocados.

  • Chocolate

I don’t know why a person would be wasting chocolate on their feathery moochers, especially since the palate of a chicken is more focused on maggots and mealworms.

But more importantly, chocolate contains an alkaloid called Theobromine which is toxic to chickens, and also to dogs and cats. Even very little can be fatal, so try other food and stay away from chocolate for your chickens

  • Green Potatoes

If potatoes are left out in the sun for a prolonged period of time they start ramping up their internal preservation processes, turning them green and contributing to high solanine accumulations, which can cause all sorts of health problems for your chickens.

  • Onions bulb

Onions contain different forms of thiosulfinates that may oxidize the hemoglobin in the blood of a chicken, leading to severe anemia.

  • Mold

There are a great many molds out there. Some good and similar to penicillin, some bad. Filling your chickens with moldy food can lead to anything from respiratory issues to liver cancer.

  • Seeds of Apple

Apple seeds (and pits from peaches, apricots, cherries, plums, etc.) all contain a substance called amygdalin which produces a small amount of cyanide when fully digested.

  • Citrus food

Citrus food is among the most controversial in this category. Most people will tell you that citrus fruit high acidity contributes to thinner eggshells. Some people say it would reduce the production of eggs. Even anecdotal citrus tales cause feather plucking and diarrhea!
